Cody Coleman left early for the airport, for one reason. He wanted to spend an hour on the beach. Long enough to consider the trip he was about to take. Long enough to wonder exactly how he was supposed to go about convincing Andi to return to him. This was his last chance to gather his thoughts and pray, and the beach was one of his favorite places for that.

It had been a week since he’d seen her on TV. The waiting had just about killed him.

The sun was up over the Santa Monica Mountains, splashing morning light on the ocean. He pulled off at Will Rogers Beach and took a spot facing the Pacific. At first he was alone, but then a car pulled in and parked on the other side of the lot. That’s when Cody noticed the pale blue lifeguard station.

Plastered on the side was a ten-foot piece of paper. Written across it was a beautiful, simple message.

kaylee, will you marry me? Love, Trey

Then Cody saw something else. There had to be a dozen bouquets of red roses sitting along the short block wall that separated the parking lot from the sandy beach. And one more message on an easel set up between the block wall and the lifeguard station. The sign read:

This will be the view . . . each brand-new day with you.

Someone was getting engaged here. Right now. Cody slid down in his seat. Should he leave? Twenty yards away a couple was getting out of the car. She had long blond hair like Andi and he was tall with dark hair. Cody could see that she had a blindfold over her eyes. Obviously she didn’t know what was coming.

Cody didn’t want to attract attention to himself, so he stayed and watched, unnoticed. The signs, the flowers, the setup. The guy was a romantic, for sure. Cody sort of wanted to see how the moment turned out.

Must be pretty sure she’ll say yes, Cody thought. The way he’d been sure when he asked Andi Ellison to marry him. Both times. He tried not to think about it. The guy—who Cody guessed was Trey—led the girl—Kaylee no doubt—to the flowers that lined the wall. Then he took the blindfold from her eyes.

Cody couldn’t hear them, but he could see Kaylee’s surprise. She was still clearly remarking over the sea of flowers when Trey led her to the easel. Now the girl was starting to get it. She put both hands over her mouth and then hugged the guy.

He was grinning so big, Cody had to smile, too.

Cody watched as Trey led the girl toward the lifeguard station. Only when they reached a spot with just the right view did she see the enormous sign. She took a few seconds to read it, and as she did, Trey dropped to one knee and pulled out a ring.

Kaylee must’ve said yes, because the two were instantly in an embrace that looked familiar for one reason. It was the same way Cody and Andi had held on to each other when they got engaged.
